Moonlight Over Seoul: A Journey to Ancient Korea on the Gyeongbokgung Palace Night Tour 🌙

When the weather gets cooler, the first Seoul nightscape that comes to mind is the ‘Gyeongbokgung Palace Night Tour’. The palace is bustling and beautiful during the day, but the night at Gyeongbokgung, awakening with soft lighting as darkness falls, is truly magical.

I’d like to share my records of this tranquil palace night, which felt like taking a time machine back to the Joseon Dynasty.

1. The Aesthetics of Dancheong and Eaves Shining Brighter in the Dark

Upon entering the Gyeongbokgung Night Tour, the first thing that catches your eye are the grand pavilions bathed in golden light against the night sky. The brilliant colors of Dancheong (traditional Korean decorative coloring) and the sharp curves of the eaves, which you might miss during the day, stand out like works of art in the dark. Standing in front of the magnificent pavilion, you can’t help but gasp at its overwhelming scale and beauty.

2. A Quiet Corridor Where Light and Shadows Dance

As you step deeper into the palace, you’ll find evenly spaced red pillars with a soft glow seeping through them. The warm light spreading through the traditional window lattices and the deep shadows create a perfect contrast, evoking a serene and mystical atmosphere. Walking slowly down this corridor makes all daily stress fade away and brings peace to your mind.

3. The Highlight of the Night Tour: Gyeonghoeru Pavilion Reflected on the Water

The undeniable centerpiece of the night tour is the ‘Gyeonghoeru Pavilion’. The perfect, mirror-like reflection of the pavilion on the calm pond is surrealistically beautiful. The view of Gyeonghoeru framed by weeping willows turns into a postcard-perfect scene with just a click of the shutter. I also tried adding a little camera trick (rotation shot) while watching the lights shimmering on the ripples to capture a dreamy vibe. Doesn’t it look like a scene right out of a dream?

4. Traditional Music Adding Charm to the Palace Night

It’s not just a feast for the eyes. A traditional Korean music (Gugak) performance unfolding on a stage set against the moonlit pavilions made the night at Gyeongbokgung even more special. As the beautiful traditional melodies flowed from the fingertips of performers dressed in elegant Hanbok and spread through the night air, I wondered if I had stepped into a utopia. It was a time that delighted both the eyes and the ears.
